2 Days to Kick Off - Arsenal's 2007/08 Chances? - By Mike Griffin (mikeg28)

Arsenal win Amserdam TournamentI recently heard this joke from a Chelsea supporter calling in to a radio talk show, who compared Arsenal to a discount retailer or TV’s Home Shopping Network, since they were all “places where you can get cheap silverware.” In a slightly humorous way, the caller was referring to Arsenal’s recent capture of what he considered “meaningless” trophies in both the inaugural Emirates Cup and the annual Amsterdam tournament.

Whether he was just venting some anger or disgust about Chelsea losing out on some pre-season hardware of its own in the Community Shield match, or taking a shot at one of his team’s main rivals, he does have somewhat of a point: pre-season honors really don’t mean a whole lot to the Premiership’s “Big Four” -- unless they lead to bigger titles when it really counts.

But this pre-season has been far from a normal summer for Arsenal and its followers, so the fact that the Gunners emerged victorious in these recent competitions takes on a much broader meaning for the North London side. Deemed a “club in crisis” just weeks ago by media pundits and by some of its own supporters who predicted a slide down the EPL table for the coming season, Arsenal have used the pre-season matches to build a renewed confidence and spirit within its talented ranks that should carry over into the 2007-08 campaign’s early months.

While the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and others have splashed the cash this summer in hopes of unseating Arsenal as the main threat to Chelsea and Manchester United, Arsene Wenger again shrewdly made only a couple of “minor” signings while repositioning and reworking his setup to improve the squad. Those changes were on view in both pre-season tournaments, with the incoming Bacary Sagna allowing Emmanuel Eboue to move into a right wing slot. His play there in the recent competitions was outstanding at times, and is further indication that Wenger plans to play him in a more forward role within the revised Arsenal setup.

Another positional change that proved successful for Arsenal in pre-season was Wenger’s decision to play Alex Hleb in a more advanced central role similar to Dennis Bergkamp’s position years ago. As forum member LooneyGooner mentioned on the boards in one of his posts, these pre season games have shown just how effective Hleb can be behind the strikers, “by providing him more space when receiving the ball in the middle of the pitch (rather than out wide) and allowing him to get a few good turns and tricks in, to be the player he can be. His passing this pre-season has been immaculate.”

While some supporters may have expected Cesc Fabregas and Kolo Toure to be team leaders to step up in responsibility and action during these pre-season tournaments, it has been two other players assuming the outspoken leadership helm – Robin van Persie and William Gallas. Considered more of a negative, complaining force by supporters in his first season with the club, Gallas has come out more recently with more positive comments about felllow Gunners and the club, and is looking more suited as the veteran-type leader needed to guide his talented young teammates. Wenger immediately responded by handing him the captaincy for the forthcoming season with Toure & Gilberto as deputies, more about that in this weeks news headlines...

In my opinion, and to counter the Chelsea fan who joked about these “meaningless” trophies, I would say that this Arsenal team in its current state truly needed these trophies at this time to remind itself of its capabilities and to show league opposition that it remains a serious title contender. But, will this talented young team continue to progress in such a way to challenge either on the domestic or European front this season? Will the loss of Henry prove too much to overcome this time around? Will Wenger’s modifications be enough to guide the squad to renewed glory in the near future, or is more needed to deepen the squad for the various competitions this campaign? These are all questions for forum members and newsletter readers to ponder and respond to. With the season kicking off this weekend, how do you rate the Gunners’ chances in the Premiership, Champions League and domestic Cups this season? Email your comments to admin@arsenalcommunity.co.uk and we'll publish a selection of your responses in the next  newsletter.

For now, here’s hoping for a strong start in the opening weekend action at home against Fulham, and victory over Sparta Prague to gain the group stages in Champions League action!

Gallas named as captain
Gallas Named As Captain Arsène Wenger has confirmed that William Gallas will captain Arsenal during the coming season. The centre back, who joined from Chelsea less than a year ago, will be supported by vice-captains Gilberto and Kolo Toure on the pitch while Jens Lehmann will have a role off it.

Speaking to Arsenal TV Online on Thursday lunchtime the Arsenal manager outlined the reason for the change. Wenger is in charge of a very young squad this term so he needs to use every scrap of experience.

“[The captain] will be William Gallas,” he said. “There will also be two vice-captains, Kolo Toure and Gilberto.

“I feel centre back is always the best position to lead on the pitch and it is Gallas who has more experience at the back. But Gilberto has always been a great captain and Kolo Toure has a stature too.

“Aswell I made a decision that I want all those experienced players, along with Jens Lehmann, to be involved off the pitch. Players like Jens and Gilberto can play the role of a club captain. They can have a very strong impact mentally on the team. I want them to take on that responsibility.” Have your say on Wenger's decision here.

Adebayor targets Blackburn game for comeback
Emmanuel Adebayor is targeting the trip to Blackburn on 19 August for his first Premiership outing of the season.

The Togo striker, vital to Arsenal's hopes now that Thierry Henry has moved to Barcelona, has been ruled out of the campaign's curtain-raiser against Fulham with a groin problem but should return to training this week. More on this story here.

Djourou moves north in loan deal
Just making it into this week's newsletter, Birmingham have tied up a season-long loan deal for defender Johan Djourou.

The 20-year old has been under the scrutiny of Birmingham's manager Steve Bruce for most of the close season and has made no secret of his desire to bring the youngster to St Andrew`s for a year. Read the full story

Premiership: Arsenal vs Fulham (Sun 12th August 2007 - 12:00)
An opening Premiership season tie at home to Fulham awaits the Gunners on Sunday, and following a promising pre-season campaign, Arsenal fans will be full of expectation for the fixture against their London rivals.

Diaby and Fabregas should recover from a virus and be available, however Adebayor is out with a groin problem and Gilberto won’t yet be back fit after his post Copa America holiday. Arsene Wenger has a few options for the team on Sunday. Jens Lehman along with the back four should be definite, but he has to choose between Hleb, Eboue and Walcott on the right, and Denilson, Diaby or Flamini alongside Fabregas. He also has the option of a 4-5-1 with Hleb behind van Persie, or a 4-4-2 with Eduardo pairing Robin up front. Have your say on the opening fixture and Get the full match build-up here.

Van Persie hits out at Ljungberg
Robin Van Persie has accused Freddy of citing "weak" reasons for leaving and went on to say him and other Arsenal team-mates were "disappointed" at his parting words at both club and manager. Forum members have met these comments with split reactions, some saying they'd go as far as booing Freddy if he should return to play against Arsenal at the Emirates, while others disagreed and thought Freddy had done enough to receive a warm welcome. Who should have been Arsenal's captain?
Arsenal fans have been debating for sometime who they thought should be captain, long before William Gallas was announced as skipper. See who they thought should have been rightful captain, and add your own thoughts. Is Gallas your 1st choice?

Chelsea Fans a laughing stock?
In our "Rivals Chat" section, it was revealed that lowly Derby County have sold more season tickets pre-season than Chelsea. Of course this compounded the Arsenal way of thinking that Chelsea fans were made up of "Jonny come latelys" and "Glory Hunters" and caused a sense of amusement on our forums. So why can't Chelsea fill their stadium with a squad full of superstars? You tell us!
